12.21.10: Nice to meet you

(left to right: fiona, evan, stella, melissa, daphne)

While Evan and Melissa were here visiting for a couple days, the girls took full advantage of their new entertainment (especially since we were stuck inside the whole time due to all the rain). Not only did the girls enjoy new interpretations of their favorite books and finding their elbows and cheeks, but they also learned to shake hands. The most adorable of course is shaking hands. They run up to you, giggle, and stick out their hands. Then you shake their hand and say 'nice to meet you'. There is more giggling and then they run to the next adult to repeat. This goes on for at least five minutes....perfect for a rainy day.

12.15.10: Weigh-in

Today we went for our 18 month checkup. The girls did great and thankfully no shots. The exciting news is how much everyone weighs:

Fiona: 22lbs 9oz (~25th percentile)
Daphne: 25lbs 8oz (~70th percentile)
Stella: 22lbs (~20th percentile)

Yes, that's right. Fiona and Stella are STILL less than a pound apart while Daphne continues to increase her lead on both of them. I swear they are all offered the same food. Everyone is at least 32 inches tall ( >50th percentile). I seriously question the length measurement due to technique. Laying a squirmy baby on a bed while holding down a limb and drawing a line is bad enough...but once you get three kids on the same wrinkled paper with multiple lines, well I'm just not so sure about the accuracy. Regardless, they are growing and that is the most important. We left with a goal of transitioning to 'real' meals and eating with utensils. I will definitely avoid those until the new year. That's right, I'm pulling out the triplet card one more time :)

12.11.10: Eighteen months old

Stella (purple), Fiona (blue) and Daphne (white) are eighteen months old today. This month the girls starting saying multi syllabic words; Fiona - banana, Daphne - bubble and Stella - yellow. We decided to celebrate their half-birthday with a trip to see santa. Thankfully due to some helpful negotiations from my friend Heather, we were able to skip about 20 places in line for our photo.

Unfortunately, the girls were pretty scared of santa. This picture was our 'best'. If you look closely, you can see that I am pinning Daphne's head forward with my cheek. Brant was also holding up Fiona and preventing Stella from running away. All while santa sits alone. I imagine a video of our photoshoot would have been pretty hilarious. Regardless, we got a picture of the girls with santa, which was our goal. Hopefully next year, santa will be a little less scary.

That evening we adventured to a housewarming/holiday party. Conveniently, the host family has two young kids and a giant driveway. Sidewalk chalk anyone? The girls were totally into it and embraced coloring on the ground without any concern (or interest in eating the chalk).

12.5.10: Alma mater

(fiona/orange, daphne/blue, stella/pink)

I like to tease Brant because he worked at chuck e. cheese for about ten minutes back in high school. Well imagine my excitement when Devin decided to have his birthday party at Brant's alma mater. We have never been before, we would never dare it alone. A family birthday party seemed like the perfect time to try it out. The girls did great; enjoying the riding toys, slide, and even tolerating mr. cheese himself.

12.4.10: Spoon separation

(left to right: fiona, daphne, stella)

We are a little behind on the 'eating with utensils' milestone. Primarily because the girls lose their minds when we take away their spoons. Secondly because we have triplets - yes, I will be using THAT card. With both Brant and I home, we attempted self feeding oatmeal. It went pretty well with everyone getting a majority of the oatmeal into their mouths, but as anticipated, there was serious upset upon spoon separation.

12.2.10: Imagine my surprise

(left to right: fiona, daphne, stella)

- Three little girls who elected to sit next to each other at their craft table.
- Three little girls sitting still long enough for me to get the camera.
- Three little girls looking directly at the camera for a picture.
- Imagine my surprise, when the picture even turned out - definitely blogworthy.

12.1.10: My socks are stuck

Daphne, Stella and Fiona modeling their new tights. I'm not sure why we haven't worn tights sooner, but today was our first day. Immediately the girls were trying to pull off their tights as they do their socks. There was a whole bunch of 'mama' and 'help' but after several attempted explanations, I decided just to call them pants. Eventually they gave in and decided to tolerate the tights. Phew.

11.29.10: No storytime, but books

(left to right: fiona, daphne, stella, nana)

Determined to find something new to do in this chilly weather, we adventured to our walkable library branch in our triple tandem stroller. We made it into the library no problem. There is no toddler storytime, but there are books and a table (as one would expect in a library). The girls seem to enjoy flipping through all the colorful pages. Fiona took a special liking to a book about recycling (she is holding it in the picture) and refused to let go of it. Why induce a tantrum by taking it away? It was just easier to check it out and bring it home - along with a few others.

11.28.10: Winter wear

(left to right: fiona, stella, daphne)

What happened to my east coast weather cred? I don't know. Growing up in Seattle, winter in Boston was a huge adjustment. Next came winter in Chicago - somehow colder, but less of a shock after our time on the east coast. Then we move to Southern California. Ahh, warmer winters than Seattle. Well somehow, in just over a year, I have lost all of my winter weather toughness.

This is a picture of the girls all bundled up for our nightly walk. It was a chilly night, the coldest the girls have experienced this season. I had to bundle them up in everything I had (including these new adorable hats). What temperature was it after all.........in the low 50's.

I am just embarassed, what happened to me?

11.23.10: Accessible library?

Storytime at a local library seems like a great idea, right? Nana is here so why not give it a try while I have an extra set of hands? Toddler time is at a nearby branch that we need to drive to, unfortunately not our walkable branch. So we go, we drive to the library. We arrive - things are going okay. We load two girls into the twin stroller and carry one in the ergo. We reach the entrance...steps, only steps. We see a side door that appears to be a handicap entrance 'lift.' We get into the open air lift and barely fit - perhaps a sign. We survive the experience and are up the five step distance and inside the library - mission accomplished, now where is that storytime?

Oh not so fast. Turns out the building is old - hence the retrofit handicap entrance (how old can it really be? we are in California, not Boston). While heading to the front desk, the front desk that everyone must pass by to get into the library, there are two narrow walkways. Two narrow walkways separated by a solid wood pillar. Surely, I will fit through this walkway. I takeover driving the stroller from Nana, this is going to take expert navigation - she understands. Of course I am taunted by a woman who just made it through this walkway with her twin stroller. If she fits, I fit. I always fit. This is nothing. Smash, smash, smash - wood particles coming off the pillar, the girls looking at me, has mama lost her mind? I must fit, I must fit. Pop a wheelie and try to lift up the stroller over the pretty, but completely unnecessary, molding along the bottom of the pillar. Finally, we fit - but seriously there must be an easier way?

A library worker comes over to help me perhaps noticing that I was going to make it into the library regardless of the damage to the pillar. I don't care if I make a scene, I have triplets - I am always a spectacle. This is my public library and we are going to storytime. He tells me to find him when leaving and he will show me an easier way to get in/out of the building.

Storytime goes pretty well, the girls seem into it. Books, felt board, songs and oddly a short movie (yes, a movie at the library). The girls don't watch tv (expect football) so they totally lost interest in the movie, it made me smile. We get ready to go. Bonnie and I discuss that it went pretty well and the girls seem to dig storytime. We find the man to show us the 'easy' entrance.

After two workers whispered to each other for a couple minutes, one leads us down the hall, with a set of keys. He escorts us through various hallways and a meeting room to a side ramp. Here it is, here is the easier exit. Then he says my favorite comment of the day. "This entrance is usually locked, so if you want to come in - just call us ahead of time and someone will come and unlock the door so you can get in." Seriously?

So I left thinking there is no way we are going to storytime again. I can say that we will be looking into different options - perhaps another branch will have better accessibility. If not, I suppose I can backpack one, front ergo one, and push one in an umbrella stroller - which guarantees me to be a spectacle!

11.20.10: Please read

(left to right: daphne, fiona, nana, stella)

The girls love having books read to them. Coincidentally they have also learned to sign 'please read.' It should come as no surprise that the two combined mean that any visitor is requested to read. How can you deny three adorable babies politely signing 'please read?"....you can't.

11.15.10: Teaching Grandy

Today the girls and I took Grandy to the zoo. They had a great time teaching her about all the animals (especially the monkeys and giraffes).

(left to right: stella, fiona, daphne)

After a good nap, the girls were excited to model for Grandy who was taking tons of pictures. It is really rare to catch everyone smiling AND sitting still.

(left to right: fiona, daphne, stella)

I'm not sure I ever captured a picture of the nameplates I made above the girls' cribs. They were of course, still modeling for the camera.

11.13.10: Walking home

(left to right: daphne, stella, fiona)

Grandy caught this great family photo of everyone walking home from the park. With a 3:3 (adult:child) ratio, we were able to keep the girls happy at the park...of course this meant that we dominated the swings.

11.12.10: Lesson learned

(left to right: stella, daphne, fiona)

With Grandy in town, we adventured to the children's museum, but this time with a twist...we explored the outdoor area. I haven't spent much time in this area before as it is not contained and the girls like to wonder off - in different directions of course. I knew there was a water table, I was warned to bring a change of clothes, but I didn't listen. I thought my girls would never throw THAT much water on themselves. I was very, very wrong. They all got so wet that they couldn't go down a slide smoothly due to their wet pants. After pouring buckets and buckets of water on themselves (and each other) we headed home - mostly naked. After several sessions with a hair dryer and three days, their shoes were finally dry. Lesson learned: when someone suggests bringing a change of clothes - listen!

11.11.10: Seventeen months old

(left to right: fiona, daphne, stella)

At seventeen months, the girls are really becoming little people (vs. babies). We find some sort of errand or adventure everyday and try to do something crafty (crayons, painting, etc) at least once a week. The girls have started sharing with each other especially when someone is upset. I have seen each of them bring a sippy cup to someone who is devastated that their current cup is empty. They are becoming a little gang and occasionally sit patiently while I read a book. This month they have begun demanding books be read to them ALL THE TIME. Brant has even had to hide a few that we just couldn't take reading for a 100th time. Each day the girls learn new words/sounds and continue to impress us with their understanding of language.

It has become difficult to track who says what and add it to the blog, so I am including the original list below for historical purposes. I'm sure that this list excludes several words for each of them, but I am a mom of triplets so somehow it seems excusable.

Talking:
(when other people - besides Brant and me - recognize what is being said by the girls)

13 months:
Daphne: up, this

14 months:
Fiona: up
Daphne: ball
Stella: dog, nana (banana)

15 months:
Stella: ball
Daphne: dog, apple, nana (banana)

16 months:
Fiona: ball, dog, cat, nana (banana), bowl
Daphne: cheese, milk, book, car, more, please, bowl
Stella: please, cheese, apple

11.9.10: Shakers

(left to right: stella, fiona, daphne)

Brant was watching football so I needed to find something to do. I ended up making some shakers for the girls with leftover yarn and christmas bells. They really seem to like 'shaking' at preschool so I attempted to mimic the shaker at home. After a good twenty minutes of constant jingling, I began to regret this decision. Perhaps they will be a special toy that only appears once in a while rather than everyday.

11.4.10: Hats vs. Bloomers

Grandy made these adorable dresses for the girls, complete with matching bloomers. Unfortunately, the bloomers are a little snug in the thighs. However, the Fiona and Stella really seemed to embrace their new hats....Daphne, not so much.

(stella/green, fiona/pink, daphne/yellow)

10.31.10: Half Nerd

(left to right: stella, fiona, brant, daphne)

The main Halloween event this year was Brant's work party as the girls are still too young to trick-or-treat. Brant came up with the idea of the girls costume this year and of course, wanted to incorporate science. That's right, he made them nerdy - but it's Halloween so somehow it seems okay. Fiona and Stella are Up Quarks while Daphne is a Down Quark. When you put them all together, it makes a Proton. I know, I know, but they are half-nerd after all.

I was able to reuse the birthday candle onesies from June and felt from last Halloween. I had to purchase one piece of blue felt ($.29) which I believe makes these costumes the cheapest ever. Regardless of cost, the idea is one-of-a-kind and the girls were comfortable and happy for Halloween. You really can't ask for more than that.

10.27.10: Zoo escape

(left to right: daphne, brant, stella, fiona)

Brant's work has been a little intense lately, so we decided it was time for a long lunch break at the zoo. The day was beautiful, in the low 80's, and the zoo was calm. We saw lots of animals and the girls actually seem to recognize some of them - although they were all called dogs.

10.20.10: Blowing kisses

The girls (top to bottom: fiona, daphne, stella, stella) were being especially adorable while eating. Perhaps they knew their great aunt needed an extra big smile.

10.17.10: Holding zone

(left to right: stella, daphne, fiona)

The girls wait in front of the ottoman when I am carrying one of them upstairs or when we are preparing food. Basically, this is the area they all can see what is going on outside their play area - now lovingly called 'the holding zone'. Well today, something special was going on at the feeding table and they wanted to make sure to see what was happening.

It was bath night, Kelly and Rob were here, I was feeling brave. So we got everyone undressed (we know from past experiences that 'washable' labels are very deceiving) and attempted finger/sponge painting. They all 'helped' each other but seemed a little unsure of the whole thing. My favorite part was the paint on their bellies. Way to think outside of the box girls!

(left to right: fiona, daphne, stella)

(left to right: stella, rob, daphne, kelly, fiona)

Overall it was a great visit. I think we were singing 'If you're happy and you know it' when this picture was taken. It looks like Daphne is clapping and Fiona is showing hooray.

10.15.10: Me too

Kelly and Rob are here for a long weekend. You know what that means? Three adults = trip to the park. So we walked, we ALL walked, to the park. Of course the girls went directly for the swings and were pretty upset when they were taken out of the swings. At least we got some good smiles while they were there.

(fiona)

(stella)

(daphne)

Then we all walked home. I was very impressed that the girls made it all the way to and from the park walking by themselves. Of course, there was the occasional redirection necessary when veering toward the street or bushes. (stella/stripes, fiona/green, daphne/pink).

While attempting to have drinks outside, the girls decided that they too were going to order from the menus. Five minutes of entertainment came out of the those menus. We will take what we can get. (Daphne/front, Stella/middle, Fiona/back).

10.11.10: Sixteen months old

(left to right: fiona, daphne, stella)

Sixteen months, wow! The past month has been full of chatter. The girls are really starting to communicate with each other and occasionally toss a word or two at Brant and me. Fiona and Stella each have sixteen teeth(!) popping through in various stages and Daphne isn't far behind with 14. We are off of bottles (phew!). The girls have started to play together and sometimes even share. They LOVE having books read to them. They have been enjoying pre-preschool with new songs, toys and kids to steal things from. We have started the process of shortening the morning nap as there seems to be a lot of giggling during this time. Probably by eighteen months we will be down to one three-hour nap. Oh yes, and the cutest of all - the girls have started giving each other hugs and kisses - priceless.

10.10.10: Following directions

(left to right: fiona, stella, daphne)

The girls seemed to really enjoy playing with the kidsize table and chairs at pre-preschool so when the opportunity came to get a used table from a twin mom, I took it. The problem is that they don't seem to quite understand the concept of 'not climbing.' Within one hour of playing everyone had stood up on the bench. Then Stella made her way to standing on top of the table while I was changing a diaper. Shortly after, the table was removed.....perhaps we need work on following directions first.

10.7.10: Ear infections

After a good week and a half of runny noses and wet coughs (coincidentally timed with starting pre-preschool), Brant took Fiona and Stella into the doctor to get checked out. Turns out they both have ear infections. Oddly, there were no signs of an ear infection - no ear tugging or fever. The doctor encouraged us to bring Daphne in as she was 'almost assured' of also having an ear infection even if she didn't show any symptoms (yet). Thankfully, Daphne checked out just fine. Even though Daphne got sick first, somehow she escaped her first ear infection. At least we are on the road to recovery and in 4-6 weeks we will be all better.

10.4.10: Bottles no more

(left to right: stella, daphne, fiona, brant)

I am THRILLED to report that we are finally done with bottles. Daphne weaned herself from bottles back in July mainly because she wanted to be able to walk around the nursery and drink. Why lay still and drink milk when you can wander about the room? Fiona and Stella really had no interest in drinking milk through a sippy cup. Of course they would happily drink water from a sippy cup, no problem - but milk, no way.

Well after weeks of slowly transitioning from water to watery milk to milky water and finally straight milk during the day we finally decided to eliminate the bottles. We knew that the girls in fact COULD drink milk from a sippy cup and were just electing not to. After several nights of bringing up every possible sippy cup type we have (yes, I bought almost every one recommended by friends) in addition to bottles, Fiona seemed to realize the perks of a cup over a bottle as well. From there, no turning back. Fiona was off the bottle. Now for the hold out. We made Stella try the sippy cup for a couple nights and just before bed after refusing to drink anything, we caved and took her in the other room to drink a bottle (no way we were showing Fiona that Stella was getting a bottle). After two nights of that we decided Stella too, was done with bottles. This photo is from the morning after our first night with no bottles. Yayyyyy!

9.26.10: First time in the ocean

(brant/daphne, kari/fiona, grandy/stella)

Today we met up with Grandy and Kelly boy at Venice beach. While we have been to Venice beach before, this time we actually went to play in the ocean (for the first time). We just got our feet wet, but it was great. Growing up my grandparents always took my sister and me to the ocean so it was extra special to have the girls experience this new adventure with their Grandy. We also enjoyed a picnic and played in the sand a bit. The car ride home was VERY quiet, I think we finally wore the girls out.

(fiona/purple, stella/white, daphne/pink)

9.24.10: Pre-preschool

(left to right: me/fiona, daphne, stella)

Today was our first day of what I am calling pre-preschool. Somehow several community/city colleges around here offer a FREE class that allows kids and their parents to play and learn together. I heard about this class from some twin moms and decided to give it a try. Of course, I had to verify with the teacher that my 3:1 ratio would be ok given that all others in the class were 1:1. So while Grandy was here, we attempted this big adventure. It went pretty well and we will try to go as often as possible for the remainder of the term. The girls had a great time playing with all new toys. I had a great time getting several extra hands to watch over my little ones who insist upon going in different directions. First day of school, check!

9.21.10: Sitting still

(left to right: fiona, kelly, stella, daphne)

Kelly (very graciously) agreed to attempt the children's museum with us during her short visit to LA. We had a wonderful couple of days together. The girls took a serious liking to Kelly and I think they won her over with their kisses. Of course, when we attempted the group photo - this is what happened. I thought this picture appropriately expressed how I feel sometimes when trying to do something as simple as getting a group picture. Special thanks to Kelly for spending so much time with us during her very busy mini-vacation.

9.19.10: Impromptu workout

(left to right: stella, fiona, daphne)

When you have triplets, people assume you will have to bring a stroller everywhere...that is SO not the case. Brant and I have finally figured out how to carry our crew and get a workout at the same time.

9.17.10: Indestructible

Fiona is holding the most amazing baby book ever. This book is 100% indestructible and after two weeks surviving triplets, I will agree that it is titled appropriately. If you have kids who like to flip pages of books (even when someone is standing on said book), eat the book pages, or just practice ripping paper then these books are for you. Nana got the girls this book and it has been well tested and is officially triplet approved.

Ever since we got back from Indianapolis, the girls have been obsessed with dogs. Any animal with four legs is a dog. Needless to say, the books with pictures of dogs have become more popular. I thought this picture of Stella was hilarious because if you look closely, you can actually see her icicle of drool (yes, we are nearing fountain level here). Of course, if I had 8ish new teeth coming in at the same time, I would be a fountain as well.
